How the calder food group started

A few of us started buying bulk orders of wholefoods together. It meant we could afford to buy quality organic food. As more people became interested It seemed to make sense to set up officially and open the service to all people on low incomes in and around Hebden Bridge. We started operating as Calder Food Group in November 2002 out of a friend's kitchen.

What we do

Thanks to a start up grant of £500 from the Community Foundation for Calderdale, we were able to buy a stack of food staples and storage containers. We aim to order in bulk from a wholesalers at least once a month. A range of basic goods are kept in stock at the group so people can weigh out their required amount. Other items can be bought in bulk by members in our regular group order, providing they are paid for up front. Members can also request items to be stocked by the group if they will be purchased regularly.

How the group runs

We work on a not-for-profit basis along co-operative principles. This means that everyone who joins the food group as a member is responsible for making it work. All members are included in decision making at regular scheduled meetings.

Minutes of the meetings will be available for everyone to see.

Goods that are available

We try to stock organic / fair trade products whenever possible. Goods that are kept in stock are vegan, but it is possible to order your own non-vegan goods in the group order. Due to health & safety restrictions the group can only stock dry / pre-packaged goods. Examples of stocked goods: soya milk, grains, oils, teas, washing powder, pulses, seeds, nuts, sugar, salt... A full list of goods and prices is available. All food is subject to a 5% mark up to cover costs.
